22 November 2007

STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN! And against every human being.

November 25th is the day to remind the whole world that we must stop VIOLENCE against women

Today was probably another ordinary day for you, but TODAY lots of WOMEN all over the world SUFFERED just because they are women.

For some women HOME is not a refuge, but a place of terror. Every day, in every country in the world, women and girls are beaten and sexually assaulted by husbands, fathers, and other family members. They usually don't tell anybody because they feel scared, embarrased, isolated...

But that's not the way to stop violence. Ask for help if you are in this situation, or know anybody who is.

In this town we call home

Everyone hail to the pumpkin song

In this town, don't we love it now?

Everybody's waiting for the next surprise

Please, write down your answers and your opinion about the rules.

Here is a little CLUE (a song from a famous film...).
Gangsters Paradise – Coolio

As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I take a look at my life and realise there's not much left
Cause I've been brassing and laughing so long that
Even my mamma thinks that my mind is gone
But I ain’t never crossed a man that didn't deserve it
Me be treated like a punk, you know that's unheard of
You better watch how you talking, and where you walking
Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk
I really hate to trip but I gotta lope
As they croak I see myself in the pistol smoke ... fool
I'm the kinda G that little homies want to be like
On my knees in the night, saying prayers in the street light
They been spending most their lives living in the gangsta's paradise
We keep spending most our lives living in the gangsta's paradise

Look at the situation, they got me facing
I can't live a normal life, I was raised by the strip
So I gotta be down with the hood team
Too much television watching got me chasing dreams
I'm a educated fool with money on my mind
Got my 10 in my hand and a gleam in my eye
I'm a loped out gangsta set trippin banger
And my homies is down so don’t arouse my anger ... fool
Death ain’t nothing but a heartbeat away
I'm living life do or die, what can I say
I'm 23 now but will I live to see 24
The way things is going I don't know

Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me.

They been spending most their lives living in the gangsta's paradise
We keep spending most our lives living in the gangsta's paradise
Power and the money, money and the power
Minute after minute, hour after hour
Everybody's running, but half of them ain’t looking
What's going on in the kitchen, but I don't know what's cooking
They say I've got to learn but nobody's here to teach me
If they can't understand it, how can they reach me
I guess they can'tI guess they won'tI guess they front
That's why I know my life is out of luck ... fool

They been spending most their lives living in the gangsta's paradise
We keep spending most our lives living in the gangsta's paradise
Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me.
Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me.

HAPPY DAY, MY DEAR EARTH!

On April, 22nd we'll celebrate Earth Day.
But we are destroying the Earth (our planet!) faster than ever.
As teenagers, you will inherit(=heredar) the planet. You will need to find ways to go on with human progress, without destroying the Earth in the process.

Recycling programs in our school, conserving energy in your home, and keeping water clean are just a few actions you can take in your community to help the planet. We can educate people to change their habits to have a better future for our Earth.
How big is your (footprint) impact on Earth? Do you really want to know? Do this QUIZ (1st-2nd ESO) or this QUIZ (3rd-4th ESO).
Surprised?, OK,
What can you do?
Now, send me your opinions, suggestions, and play these easy
GAMES, or design your own BOOKMARK(=señalador de libro) to celebrate this day.

SEMANA SANTA

This is my favourite
"
MARCHA procesional"(click to listen to it). What's your favourite "marcha"? Why?
Easter week is a Catholic celebration in Spain. They celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus and it´s particularly popular in the South. Even though it is a Catholic event, everybody enjoys it. Years ago, it was just a religious feeling. Women wore black clothing, men always wore dark suits with a black tie, and everybody was so serious. Today, in Spain, it's different, together with the religious feeling, people have fun, meet their friends, and see the floats(=pasos) just to enjoy the art in them.

What about EASTER in Great Britain? There're lots of SYMBOLS you'll like to know about.

CARNIVAL IN LONDON

The Notting Hill Carnival is a symbol of London's multi-cultural status. It began with the Abolition of Slavery Act (abolición de la esclavitud) in 1833 when the first carnival was celebrated in Trinidad. Caribbean’s took to the streets and celebrated with songs, dance and costumes. During the 1950’s the West Indian immigrants brought their traditions with them to England. The Carnival found a home in Notting Hill in 1964. This carnival has the strong Caribbean style of its origins: Steel Drums, Calypso and Soca music ring through the streets. There are extravagant costumes, floats and dancing. It is a symbol of London’s multi-cultural status. Click HERE to watch a video.
Did you like it? Is it very different from the Carnival in Bollullos?

HAPPY ST. VALENTINE'S!!

Happy St. Valentine to averyone! I hope you received lots of carnations from your friends, and sweethearts. Do you know the real story of St.Valentine? Read this text and do the exercises, and then, if you feel inspire, write your own poem. This is the song we'll listen to in class. The group is called The Corrs, and they're from Ireland. I hope you like it.

The Corrs - Breathless
Go on, go on
Leave me breathless
Come on
The daylight's fading slowly
The time with you is standing still
I'm waiting for you only
The slightest touch and I feel weak
I cannot lie
From you I can not hide
I'm losing will to try
Can't hide it
Can't fight it
So go on, go on
Come on leave me breathless
Tempt me, tease me
'Till I can't deny this
Loving feeling
Let me long for your kiss
Go on, go on
Yeah come on
And if there's no tomorrow
And all we have is here and now
I'm happy just to have you
You're all the love I need somehow
It's like a dream
Although I'm not asleep
I never want to wake up
Don't lose it
Don't leave it
So go on, go on
Come on leave me breathless
Tempt me, tease me
'Till I can't deny this
Loving feeling
Let me long for your kiss
Go on, go on
Yeah come on
And I can't lie
From you I can not hide
I've lost my will to try
Can't hide it
Can't fight it
So go on, go on
Come on leave me breathless
Tempt me, tease me
'Till I can't deny this
Loving feeling
Make me long for your kiss
Go on, go on
Come on leave me breathless
Go on, go on
Come on leave me breathless
Go on, go on
Come on leave me breathless
Go on, go on

Last month I went to a very special place with my family. La Jayona is a mine in the south of Badajoz, you can visit it and you'll learn about how men, women and children worked in mines in the early 1920's. A very interesting place and a beautiful natural scenery. It's a good idea to go there with your family, I'm sure you'll love it!

THE FUTURE OF YOUR PLANET

TONIGHT, some of the monuments in Europe will be in darkness. WHY?...... It's a symbolic complaint against CLIMATE CHANGE. Our planet is getting warmer. Scientists predict more droughts(sequías), floods(inundaciones) and extreme weather and say that human activities are responsible for this. In this short text you can learn more about global warming(calentamiento global), greenhouse effects(efecto invernardero), and its consequences.

PEACE

Hello everybody, Tomorrow we'll be celebrating the day of Peace in the schools. We'll use the song "Zombie", by The Cranberries, in class as a starting point to talk about peace, and eventually we'll produce some messages of peace. I found this information on the web which may help you understand the song better. Read it (it's too long, but you don't have to read it all. Choose the parts you're more interested in) and send me your comments.
